Fashion house GIVENCHY presented their Spring Summer 2023 Menswear Collection, that brings modern looks through the looking glass of savoir-faire, on June 22nd, during the ongoing Paris Fashion Week. For his first Givenchy‘s standalone ready-to-wear men’s show, designer Matthew M. Williams identifies the archetypical garments and accessories that make up an authentic wardrobe, and amplifies them through the artisanal and technological possibilities of Parisian craftsmanship. The collection explores the brand’s codes as well as dress codes of the past and reimagines them in a new and contemporary way. Williams was inspired by the men who surround him. With the collection Williams explores the societal uniforms of America through the refined elegance of the brand.
Menswear was, quite naturally, the way I discovered fashion. In my practice at Givenchy, my men’s collections came from an instinctive starting point. This show is a reflection of myself and the men who surround me, from my close friends to the artists who inspired my work. It’s a dialogue with the time and culture that shape the way men dress today and tomorrow: the way new generations embrace and evolve the archetypes and dress codes of the past through their own progressive outlook. “A new tailoring silhouette emerges in black and grey blazers and coats expanded but relaxed in volume. They are worn with matching trousers ripped at the knee to reveal their logo-adorned lining in the style of the diy alterations of a uniformed schoolboy. A blouson and cargo short in tan and beige leather are patchworked from undyed offcuts upcycled from the Maison’s leather factory, and laminated for a rigid structure. Classic shell jackets in mint green and black are constructed in super lightweight leather. Evoking a military surplus sensibility, leather varsity jackets are adorned with logo embroidery all-over and include a motif identical to the tarot card leg tattoo carried by Williams.” – from Givenchy
